This is a holiday camp, rather than a campsite. If you don't understand what I mean, then read on!

The site has about 1000 static caravans, and room for probably 200 touring units. There is an extensive club house, with two "theatres" where evening entertainment is held (and also some during the day, for the kids), plus restaurant, bar, fast food, and lots of slot machines.

There are also two pools, one indoor and one outdoor. We were warned by our neighbours that the indoor pool was dirty and the outdoor one was freezing, but they both seemed fine to us. In fact, the outdoor pool was very warm.

There are not enough staff managing the camping fields. We arrived on a Sunday, which was fine, but we also saw the queues the following Saturday, when there must have been a queue of at least 50 along the road, waiting to get in. And they don't do a very good job of managing. Our pitch, when we found it, was partially occupied by the neighbours, who obviously thought one pitch was not enough. When we asked what we should do, the management just told us to move along a bit, which meant we were partly on the next pitch along, so the problem just rippled on. Pitches are pretty small, so there's not a lot of room for this sort of juggling. What's more, the ground slopes quite seriously, so folks with caravans were having trouble getting all the steadies to reach the ground, and folks in tents spent all night rolling out of bed.

It's also very noisy at night, because of the "club" style of holidays people come here for. A good number of campers spend the evenings in the club, and return when others are tucked up in bed, but the clubbers don't think about the effects of their loud voices. When you combine this with people packing up to leave at 6am, clanking their poles and shouting instructions, you can expect not to get too much sleep.

Toilets and showers were rather tatty. When we arrived, there was a large section of ceiling sagging in the gents, and a lot of the ceiling over the showers was mouldy. However, they did fix the sag, and they painted over the mould while we were there. There were always just about sufficient showers, toilets and washbasins.

There were only 3 sinks for washing up in our block, but I guess a lot of people were eating out, as I don't think we ever had to wait for one. What's more, unlike every other site I've visited, there was actually enough room around each sink for separate stacks of dirty, washed and dried dishes, without having to steal space from the adjacent sink.

The site is right next to the cliffs, but there is no way down to the beach below. You can walk along the cliffs northward about 2 miles to Cayton Bay, or southward about 3 miles to Filey.

We didn't come here expecting a restful holiday - we had other reasons for coming - and we didn't get one. If you're looking for somewhere peaceful in what is undoubtedly a fine part of the world, I suggest you look for an alternative site.

I like blue dolphin a lot and camped a lot there and then I bought a static caravan. When you are camping the conditions are sometimes not ideal, with the weather and people coming in late; this is what these sites are like and if you don't like them go to a more peaceful site.
