Chantepie is a clean, friendly and well-run site.

Pitches are divided by small hedges and bushes, so you get your own space, and they're quite large.

Well maintained toilet and shower blocks (showers free).

Small but well-stocked shop.

Two swimming pools, which never seemed too crowded, even in the hot weather we had.

Chantepie is just a few hundred yards from the river Loire, and they organise canoe trips down the Loire a couple of times a week (cost extra).

The site is very child friendly. Animations [entertainment activities] are organised with great enthusiasm. There is a modest animal farm.

Visited last year (2001). Excellent site, only one gripe, some of the pitches, whilst wide enough, were difficult to reverse a twin axle Bessacar into because the driveways were very narrow with various obstacles along them.

Excellent site. Beautiful views over the Loire. Close to the wine caves.

Reasonably helpful and friendly staff.

Restaurant OK for standand fayre, but not French Gourmet.

Would go again.

Excellent campsite. The pitch (L9) we stood on had a beautiful view over the Loire. Would visit it again.

This was a super site, well maintained with plenty of space, great views, a wonderful restaurant - and beautifully clean when we were there (last week of July 2002). There were ponys on site, the main buildings are barn conversions - so very attractive in a sort of rustic way. It was a short walk to the River Loire and enough space on site to accommodate a very creative mini golf, a football field (and a visiting circus big top on one evening!). The main of three pools was heated and I have not been to a site before that had its own wine label! Mix of French, Dutch and English, with only a very few tour operators mobile homes hidden away. The facilities were all in the main block, which meant nobody was camped next to them, but for some they were a bit of a step. Reasonable rather than generous grass pitches, although ours was flat but far from level, and good mix of youngish trees and hedges. The site itself was way out of town, very secluded, but you are very car dependent. Probably ideal for cycling/walking. Certainly well positioned for canoeing, exploring chateaux and the caves. Saumur itself is quite a large place, with a quite pleasant centre (10 minute drive plus parking/traffic time). An ideal base or stop off and one of very few sites we will certainly return to. Our family (kids aged 9 and 11) give it 5 stars. Beware the ants and moles, though!

We have just returned from Chantepie, We were very pleased with the site. All the reports about this site are accurate, we were worried as some of the reports said it was on a hill side and terraced. The site was level, pitches did vary in size but the site owners would have let you move if you were not happy. A very well run excellent site in quite a central position for visiting many places of interest.

I agree with the comments above, however I would like to mention that the site is not within walking distance of any local shops cafes bars etc and Saumur is approx 10 min drive away. The site is also up a rather steep hill, which takes a good 30mins to walk up from the river. Good site as a base for touring the area.
