Although the Nozeroy campsite does not offer extraordinary facilities, we appreciate it nonetheless for its calm environment, and the magnificent landscapes it offers. Easily accessible, not too large, it’s an ideal campsite.

The tiny magical medieval town of Nozeroy (population 450 approx) is about 13km from Champagnole in Franche Comte. The town still retains its medieval walls and gates, and is mostly built of a beautiful golden stone. It was the centre for the court of the Princes of Orange for several generations. It stands on a ridge of rock surrounded by rolling countryside close to the Swiss border. It has one of most things, such as bank, garage, newsagent, baker, (butcher just closed), small supermarket, & arts and crafts display. There are two hotels with good restaurants - not too expensive. The campsite belongs to the town and is situated on a plateau just below the ruined castle walls with views over the adjacent countryside. There is electricity available at a single multi-distribution point. The toilet block has a single shower, an asian and a western WC, but with excellent hot water, and a large sink for washing up, clothes washing etc. Booking and payment is made through the tourist office, and all in it cost us less than £4 per day. They are very friendly, speak some english and will respond to faxes or emails, although most people in the area do not speak any english. There is an honour system so if you turn up when the tourist office is closed everything on the site is accessible and you pay when the office is next open. We liked the area and the people so much we have camped there twice and now bought a house nearby!
