This review is rather old. Treat it with care.

Camping and Caravan Club site situated on the outskirts of Oxford - non-members welcome.

Medium sized site. There is a Park and Ride opposite if you want to explore the town. Return fare in February 2001 was £1.30 with frequent departures throughout the day. The free map available at the portacabin is worth picking up.

Excellent internal roadways. Rather regimental in layout makes the site less visually appealing than some. Very well maintained.

If you want a quiet site you need to look elsewhere as a railway line runs close by with fairly frequent trains and there is some sort of cold food depot with large numbers of refrigerated lorries arriving and leaving both day and night.

Touchwoods Sports shop is geared more to tenting but you may find something useful. Good range of outdoor clothing.

Large facilities block for the size of site. Seven toilets, five showers, and twelve sinks should eliminate any waiting. Electric hand dryer is in the shower section. Showers were fairly roomy and worked well. No private washing cubicles.

Four deep industrial style sinks under canopy outdoors. Fitted too low as usual.

Normal C&CC on-site facilities.

There is a nature reserve nearby but that seemed to be little more than a field. The Thames is less that half a mile away and has a fairly good path. The town itself is just under two miles away - following the roads marked as a cycle route (down Bertie place) leads first through a small playground then a fair sized park further on. Head towards town from the site and turn right at the Fox and Hounds pub. The first bridge has a path which leads across a tributary of the Thames to a nature reserve.

Admittedly the brochures do say this site suffers from some noise - this is an understatement as it is located right next to fast A class roads with traffic noise and also behind site is a main train route which meant trains blasting horns at night - all the noise prevented me sleeping. I couldn't wait to move on to next site in the Cotswolds to get a good night’s sleep!

The site itself is ideally placed for visiting Oxford, bus stop is right outside entry door and runs every half hour. Just remember when in town buy some earplugs!

I visited this site during a weekend that did not suffer from rain, I was staying in a camper van so noise was not much of a problem but I felt for the people staying in tents!.

The site is ideal for visiting oxford with regular buses and you could walk which I did.

Facilities in the men's shower block need updating they are tired and scruffy but the showers were hot and they worked.

Remember that people are always more prepared to write and complain than they are to praise good service.

I would not recommend this site to campers. I found the staff very rude and inflexible. We stopped at this site during a kayaking trip down the river Thames. Despite agreeing the details of our trip in advance, the staff refused to let us turn up outside of office opening hours (1200 - 1700 hrs) and accused us of trying to sneak an extra person in. There are also lots of rules that are strictly enforced and take the fun out of camping (6m minimum tent separation, one way system, frequent toilet and shower room closures for cleaning, inflexible opening hours). We were told off on several occasions for breaking some arbitrary rule that hadn’t been made clear to us. Most disappointing of all was the attitude of one individual, who seemed to constantly hound looking for excuses to shout at us. In all my years of camping, I have never been anywhere where the staff are so unfriendly and inflexible. My friends and I will never use this campsite again.
