We stayed here for one night, as it is conveniently close to Newton Airbase where we were going to a taping of "Robot Wars". The campsite is fairly big. There is a swimming pool, a wooden adventure playground, and an indoor games room (didn't go in but could see a pool table). There appeared to be riding stables there as well.
The toilet and dishwashing facilities are of a modest but adequate standard. There are plenty of loos. The showers are operated by 20p and last for around 3 minutes (so the sign says), I found that it wouldn't have been enough time to wash my hair as well, but your mileage may vary. The showers seemed to vary in size but I think I am right in saying that they all had a spacious changing area. The facilities were all clean and tidy and were cleaned early in the morning on the day I was there.
There are two washing-up sinks. I can't comment on the laundry facilities, as I didn't need to use them.
When you arrive you are given a very comprehensive User's Guide about the campsite and the surrounding area. It has loads of useful info about nearby chemists, doctors, garages, money machines, what to see and do etc. We used the guide to find somewhere to have a meal out on the first night, and we weren't disappointed. We went to The Plough in Hickling, where we had very delicious steak and ale pie, then we all had a great time playing pool in this lovely little country pub. But if you don't want to go far, there is a pub-restaurant 150 yards away which is one of those chain pubs "Whitbread Brewer's Fayre".
Tent info: we stayed in the "large rally field" area, which is basically a very large field. The campers were arranged around the perimeter, at numbered pitch sites. The space between each pitch site seemed roomy enough, we could fit our small tent and our car between the neighbours on either side and still have some room to spare. We had a few minutes walk to the facilities block. We were pitched next to a hedge, however it wasn't particularly windy while we were there. The ground was pretty hard though.

A lot of this site reminded me of campsites of yesterday. The toilet block is very sub-standard indeed. The showers are suspicious-looking old Triton units and you get the feeling that you are washing in an old barn. The children’s playroom was filthy and the play equipment did not look maintained. The 'rally' field is shocking - ask if this is the only available pitch they can offer you and then refuse it, for it is just a rough old field that stinks of manure.
Also, bear in mind that you are not near Sherwood Forest as implied by the campsite blurb - that is another half hour drive north. Go to this site and then join either of the two big clubs to discover what modern camping is all about.

This campsite is horrible and the owner is rude and unhelpful.
We had another camper’s gazebo take off and land 2 feet from my tent in the middle of the night. When we went to get help from the owner of the site to remove it and stop it hurting someone .He said he would deal with it in the morning. Then slammed the door in our face and told us to f off.
The swimming pool was cold and the ph levels in the water too high, which made our eyes and throats hurt.
The kids play park was dangerous and had not been maintained in a long time.
We booked the pool for the afternoon session (2pm to 6pm) as there were 19 of us camping only to find we only had an hour because they had double booked it.
My friends and I were not at all happy with this site and will not be recommending anyone to go there.

After reading the brochure we were most impressed and intended to spend a long weekend there. We did not book but called in on the offchance. Thank goodness! We drove in, were appalled at the state of the site and drove straight out again.

We live locally to this site and wanted to take the children away for a long weekend. It seemed to have everything we needed. On getting there, the receptionist was rude and unhelpful, but as we found, this was the least of our problems! On the third night, after running a fridge in the car, I attempted to turn over the engine and found the battery had died. A few of us attempted to push start the car, only to be screamed at by the owner and told to leave it in the morning along with some unrepeatable words, all of which in front of my children (6 & 8)! It was 9.30, hardly late!
The facilities are awful, toilets dirty, I even went home daily to have a shower as I refused to use the ones supplied at the site! The games room is a joke and the swimming pool was nothing great! All in all, a very unpleasant stay, apart from the local pub which went down a treat with everyone! Beware; do not use this site if you want any fun!

We visited this campsite with a large group of friends and their children. We were pitched in the paddock which has spacious pitches around a large grassed area. The area was brilliant for playing rounders and cricket. We had several children over the age of 10, who were well able to hit the ball, but they never managed to hit it anywhere near any of the pitches. It was lovely that they could play within sight of our tents and caravans.
The pool was also very popular, yes it was cold, but that didn't seem to bother the kids who were desperate to visit each day.
The children enjoyed the free range chickens that wandered around, and were impressed when the farrier came to shoe the horses. All in all they had a lovely time and can't wait to visit again.
I booked the site after reading Thornton's Holt website, but was concerned when I later read the reviews on this website.
However having just spent a week at the site, I would not hesitate to recommend this site to anyone looking for a child friendly campsite.
The facilities may not be up to caravan club standards, but they were always clean. The showers were hot and had good pressure. (I was able to shower and wash my hair for 20p.)
The shop was well stocked with basics, anything else could be purchased from a large Morrisons about 3-4 miles away.
The site produce their own information book which tells you not only about the site, but also information about the local area.

Most of the reviews are accurate. The site is incredibly disappointing. On the face of it, it's quite pretty and your first thought is how charming it is to see all the various animals wandering around, ie, chickens, peacocks etc. We booked this site several months in advance and requested a quiet spot. On arrival we were given a tiny pitch (we have a folding camper and awning!) right next to the play area. I asked for another pitch and was told 'no, we're full' by the very unhelpful receptionist. After setting up it was quite clear this was a lie as there were loads of pitches available! It's not that we are against play areas, we have kids but know from experience what happens after dusk. It was invaded by noisy teenagers playing loud music, shouting, swearing and generally being anti social whilst their lazy parents got drunk elsewhere. The 10.30 pm curfew is an absolute joke. There were TVs and stereos blaring until 3.00 - 4.00 am, then the charming cockerels start crowing at 4.30 am and don't stop all day! The 'charming' aspects of the animals soon disappear when you have to listen to them day and night, and tread carefully amongst the chicken poo throughout the site! The loos and showers are basic but reasonably clean, make sure you take plenty of 20p coins. There are not enough washing up sinks for the amount of pitches on site. I would certainly not recommend this site unless you're happy to be disturbed constantly day and night. It was very busy, so it must have some appeal to some people, probably those who would not be welcome on any camping and caravanning, or caravan club site.

Visited the site in August, bit apprehensive after reading some reviews but we had an excellent stay. The children loved this site, unlike most other sites they were allowed to play ball games and ride their bikes! The swimming pool and play area are a real bonus and the animals add a different dimension. I understand that Polly and Simon the new owners have only recently taken over and have extensive plans for improvements. We will be back.

We have been to this campsite twice before and are going again this year. We have two children (4&7) and also we take our nieces and nephew (9,11 & 14) and all of us have had two great trips at this site. Ok i can agree the pool's pH levels were slightly high on one occasion, and the showers are slightly old but they supply hot water for a decent shower (20p) and they are spacious and regularly cleaned, (its a campsite not a hotel). You can play ball games without complaints, and there is a child’s play area too. The shop on site has your basics, which is all that is needed as there is a local supermarket not far away. The atmosphere has always been good when we have been there and the owners have been great to, all in all id say its a very good site and we have no complaints.

The reviews of this campsite appear to be extremely out of date and our recent visit was totally different to those previously described.

This site is brilliant for kids, there are large areas to play, a separate play area for the smaller kids and a small swimming pool which takes approx 15 people which has to be pre booked - the pool is an ideal size for that many and we had no problems booking the pool even over a bank holiday. The owner’s horses are in the stables and there are chickens running freely around the site.

There are old converted farm buildings which act as showers, toilets and washing facilities. The showers are 20p which is more than enough for one adult male but as we all know the adult female may require 40/60p. The toilets are cleaned on a regular basis and while we were at the site it would have been difficult to find fault with them.

Provision wise there is a shop on site which sells the basics inc gas. If you require other goods there is a Sainsburys Local in the next village or a Morrisons Supermarket approx 3-4 miles away. On the edge of the site there is a pub which does a week day carvery for £3.50.

Our experience has shown this site to be really good, lots of space with really friendly and helpful staff.

Would we go again - of course and we have already booked for the next bank holiday.

Try it - you won’t be disappointed.
