This review is rather old. Treat it with care.

Been once, thought it was pricey for what was provided - no hot water to wash dishes in, just a rusty greasy trough of cold water already dirty from previous dishes (I kid not). Every sink in the toilets had a sign instructing you not to wash your dishes there. I've also heard some safety concerns about the number of people they are willing to cram into the site.
On the plus side, you were allowed campfires and the setting was the most stunning I've seen for a campsite. If you're not worried about safety, hygiene and getting ripped off, this is a good campsite.
Since using this campsite, I've used the Invercoe a couple of miles down the road. It was cheaper and had all necessary facilities.

A very good campsite. Cheap, basic and beautiful!

Remember that people are always more prepared to write and complain than they are to praise good service.

The article by Mary Drummond is fairly accurate. I visited the site in august 2006.It is now £6.50 per head per night and you still have to pay 50p for a 5 minute shower in a portakabin. Given the setting of the site (which is great) I think it is really disgusting that the Owner chooses to treat people who love the outdoors in such a fashion. The facilities are a joke. This site represents everything that is bad about Scottish tourism.

Hi campers,
Was last at the site in July last year and luckily enough the weather was excellent for the duration of our stay.
I came with the missus and the children and had an excellent time. I am an east end Glaswegian and it still astounds me beyond all comprehension the sheer amount of people from my city that do not appreciate their birth right (in terms of their close proximity) to come and enjoy places such as the Red Squirrel campsite. Having said that, I'm glad it is the case, lest we be overrun by yobbos that simply don't have the mental capacity to understand what Glencoe means to anyone who is or even knows what it means to be a Scot.
Anyway, rant over.
The Red Squirrel campsite is the best campsite I've stayed in Scotland, and I've stayed in a few.
Furthermore, with regards to the moaners about midges, we all hate them but if you're camping in Scotland, resign yourself to the fact that you'll have this neighbour for the duration of your stay.
Pete Bennett.
P.S. I only posted this because we're going there again soon and I thought some of the other posts were unfavourable to say the least. Anyway, I hope you have a good un wherever you go.

My wife and I went to this site on bank holiday weekend and had a brilliant time. Yes midgies are a pain so take repellent, but its a great way to get away from it all. Basic facilities but one of the best settings. A great pub only 15 mins stagger down the road and loads to do. Worth a look for a wild adventure!

If you are looking for a nice family orientated campsite packed with facilities then the Red Squirrel is not the one to visit...try the other further along the road nearer the village. Personally speaking the Red Squirrel has the basic needs for 1-2 nighters and is easily the most scenic in the area with the best pub for miles around a hop and a skip away....spent many a good night there...it ticks my boxes.

I visited this site at the weekend just gone, Fri 12th Oct - Sun 14th Oct. Indeed site is very basic, but then this is not a family site. A good base with great views for hiking etc. Pain about the shower requiring 50p. Dish washing has hot water on tap, but still the trough. But then if you want mods and cons, don't go camping. Atlas pub was a great way to finish of the weekend. Excellent Scottish band, pub was heaving with people from all walks of life just wanting to have a good time together. Shame English pubs are not like, but then that’s the Scots for you. Always willing to welcome you with open arms. Rgds Colin.

Since first visiting Glencoe from Australia in 2006 we've been back twice and both times headed straight for the Red Squirrel. It's big enough to get a decent camp site, it is clean, staff are very friendly, views are great and it's easy to find by following the conga line after a night at the Clachaig.

Spent a VERY wet weekend here 27-29th June. Fantastic camp site if you are happy to embrace the spirit of camping. Yes it's basic - yes there are midges (why is this the responsibility of the owner - it's nature!) It was clean, the staff and owners were very friendly. Had a fantastic time even though it chucked it down most of the time. I've never seen scenery like it. If you want more buy a caravan or go to a B&B - camping is obviously not for you. PERFECT!

I had a fantastic holiday here. I was here Fri 27th June - Sun 29th June 08.
I loved the site. The scenery was amazing! I got camped right next to the river. I loved falling asleep and listening to the water rushing by my tent. I got the best sleep ever in my tent here.
The site was very clean. I saw staff out early every morning with litter pickers looking for any rubbish. The toilets and shower were also very clean.
I thought 50p for a shower was a great idea. It gave me a fair time to get showered and I felt it would make other campers not spend too long showering. I never had to wait long, even when it was busy thanks to this! ... A great boom!
I also thought £7.00 a night was ok. I spoke to many on the site who had been there many times. I could see why. It was so relaxed.
The thing I will remember most though about my visit, was how nice and friendly all the staff were. Everyone had a smile and a hello. Even when cleaning the toilets! lol
I loved the female wardens sense of humour. She thought my friend and I would leave engaged! It would have been a lovely place for such an event! But sadly we are always going to be camping buddies! lol one of the staff also shared her Birthday chocolates with us. How nice! This is needed more in Scotland I feel.
We really do hope to return again, one day. We had heavy rain a few times but it would never put us off such a nice site. we love camping and experiencing the Red Squirrel campsite has made us love it all the more.
Brian from Fife.
