This review is rather old. Treat it with care.

We stayed here in early September when the site was winding down but were quite impressed. The pool area and restaurant seemed very good and the pitches are exceptionally large. There’s plenty of historical interest in the surrounding area and Saumur is not far away.

We stayed in a site owned mobile home at L'Etang de la Breche for the last week of August, on our way back from camping in the Lot. It was the first time for several years that we have stayed in a large Castels campsite. There are plenty of good points at this site: - Space and lots of it. The pitches are large and there is plenty of free space for children to play
- Swimming pools - indoor and outdoor, both heated.Plus a waterslide pool. The pool area seemed large enough to cope with the hotter day crowds.
- The campsite mobiles are possibly the best we have stayed in - our 3 bedroom one was very spacious and well equipped.
- The owners, the St Casts, are most welcoming and run the site very efficiently. A very noisy group was evicted from the campsite after their first night of rowdiness.
- Saumur, about 10 minutes by car, is very interesting and has lots of shops and restaurants and a chateau.
- The zoo park at Deux Fontaines is well worth a visit. We had it almost to ourselves on a drizzly morning.
- The bar, takeaway and restaurant are good value and as a result always busy.
The site won't suit everyone - it really doesn't have a 'French feel' as 95% of the campers were British or Irish. Also the surrounding region is not quite as classic Loire as the area around Blois. We really enjoyed it as a change from the smaller sites we normally visit - and as a bonus the weather was the best we've had in 4 visits to the Loire valley. We would recommend it for families with school age children.

Our family of 6 stayed here in a keycamp mobile. We thought the pool area was good and had a nice meal in the restaurant one night. My little girl accidentally burned her hand on a hot surface when we were choosing from the buffet, and the staff were very kind and helpful. There is a bouncy castle and kids play area, and go-karts for hire. Fair wait for takeaway food evenings but we did turn up late on our first night absolutely starving! Enjoyed the scenery and peace in this nice site. Weather was mediocre but that's a given for us!

Excellent campsite, right in the heart of the Loire. On first impression very rural but very much like a caravan club site in the uk , the owners are lovely and Brigitte requires special commendation , she runs the site and looks after everyone beautifully. You will need a car, but visit the zoo and and Saumur , Restaurant really quite good considering it’s a campsite, this is not ever going to be Michelin rated but the prices reflect this. All in all a great family site in rural France

Stayed here for a week in august 2006. Although we didn’t book, the staff were very helpful in finding us a pitch. The site is very well laid out and has some very good facilities, everywhere there was children having fun. I thought the bar at night was somewhat dead; there was nothing in the way of entertainment during the evening. Pool is a bit small for such a big site, the football court was definitely too small, they could do with a proper sports field if possible. The town of Saumur is only 4 miles away and is well worth a visit. All in all I would recommend this site but as the said elsewhere it’s not very French, even the owner drives a Rover 75.
