Although accustomed to camping holidays, l’Anse du Brick is a 4-star site, the like of which I have seldom seen.

In terraces on the side of a hill, there’s a view of the bay to take your breath away.

Spacious pitches with flowers, maintained like an English garden.

New toilet blocks with super facilities and always clean.

Washing up area with a panoramic view.

Around the site: lovely walks in the woods or on the shore.

Attention: very hilly; pushchairs not advised.

Bike: you’ll need breath and muscle. Lots of hills and 2km of roads to get to little villages and peaceful lanes.

Kayak trips in the bay (hired at the campsite).

Ambience: Family campsite. Lots of games for the children. No entertainment after 11pm. No disco. Bigger kids could be bored.

Lovely pool, though a little small. Small beach, but not busy, and with direct access from the site. No sand at high tide. Bigger beaches 3km away.

Good quality restaurant with a superb view across the sea.

Small shop on site, but with reasonable prices. Supermarket at 5km, vehicle recommended.

Next year, we’ll be trying the accommodation arranged as a village (no lines of mobile homes) which seems very recent. Some have a precipitous view of the beach.

Reception: friendly, with staff readily available, and helpful.

Region: The presqu’île de Cotentin is a magnificent region. Wild and varied landscapes, lots of places to visit.

Conclusion: A place to be recommended, a site worthy of the Castels chain.

Peaceful, well-situated campsite, but with facilities not at all up to scratch for a 4-star site, at this price, and with the "Qualité Tourisme" label.

Staying in a mobile home: poorly equipped, old and poor quality bedding. Coveres were synthetic, worn, and not warm. Dishes worthy of a 70s cheap restaurant. Old TV, equipment rather less than basic. The pool was outside only, surrounded by concrete, and nowhere near big enough for the number of campers.

The first day, we asked at reception that they change our mattress, as we couldn't sleep due to the pain in our backs from the springs! We were not well received, and were told "that's the first time anyone's complained. Put the blankets on the mattress to soften it. All the beds are the same". We also asked if we could have a toaster. Apparently, this question was surreal. "We only provide them in the villas". Conclusion, the poor folks in mobile homes (even at €700 per week) don't even have the right to have a piece of toast!

The same evening, someone brought us an old foam mattress that was better, but not brilliant (even in a 1-star hotel, the beds are better) and given the reception we got, we decided to stop complaining and manage.

When we got home, we sent a letter to Manche Tourism, and to the Castels chain, of which the Anse du Brick is a part.

The director of the Anse du Brick responded to us basically that everything was up to standard and of a high quality at his site. The icing on the cake was that this man blamed our attitude to holidays, saying that we were not cut out for campsites!

For my next holiday, I'll make sure I ask his advice first. He obviously knows better than I do what suits me. I love it!
